8th Grade

Objective
I will analyze a memoir for figurative language.
Agenda
The Latehomecomer, textbook pages 53-66
-analyzing the text questions 2-7, from textbook pg 68
2. The author compares herself to a pot of water on the stove. She feels like she is at a turning point where she can either boil over or return to a simmer.
3. The simile helps readers to understand that writing calms the author down, like water over a flame.
4. “I could feel the cold settling in” shows that the author thinks she is dying.
5. Writing an essay about Romeo and Juliet shows the author that she is good at writing because she can write about what matters to her. In addition, this is the first time realizing that you get to write about what matters to you.
6. The author becomes sick and thinks that it is because her heart cannot handle being both Hmong and American. When she recovers, she realizes that she doesn’t have to choose: she can be both.

7. The author’s sickness teaches her that she is vulnerable; “like every other body, I could die.” She realizes her responsibility is to get up each morning, like all other Hmong and Americans, despite the challenge.
Homework
Finish analyzing the text questions for quiz on Thu/Fri.
