Getting to Know Me

Hello!

My name is Carolyn Harmon and I am teaching English 7 and English 8 at Twentynine Palms Junior High School this year for Team Athenians. Though I'm new to this classroom and area, this is my 6th first day of school as an educator. I'm just as excited and nervous as you are about this fresh start!

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was a great place to be a kid! I have a younger sister who has become my best friend (but those adolescent years were sure rough). My parents are from the Midwest so they made sure that even though they were raising a couple of California girls, we would have an understanding of and appreciation for the great outdoors. This love of nature led me to attend college in far northern California at Simpson University. Initial enthusiasm for outdoor education eventually manifest itself instead as a passion for the English language and its conventions. I graduated with a degree in English with an emphasis on Literature in 2011. I moved to Kings County (south of Fresno) following graduation and worked for an elementary school resource and intervention program, a library, and an after school program to hone my educational skills. In 2014 I relocated to Sutter County and, while continuing to work in education, transitioned to older grades. Middle schoolers swiftly became my favorite age group. Though it was a hard choice to make because I love northern California so greatly, during the summer of 2017 I accepted the position here at TPJHS and moved down to the Mojave. I miss the mountains, trees, and rivers but I can't deny that beauty exists here as well. I hope to find this same beauty in the connections I make here as a teacher. Though an outsider, I am invested in you, your education, this school, and this community. I am looking forward to spending this year with you!

Besides a teacher, I'm also just an average person. Some of my interests outside of education are: biking, hiking, camping, traveling, trying new things, and catering to my dog (she's kind of a diva). This summer I was able to visit 9 western states. Some highlights included biking a rail trail from Montana into Idaho with my dad, whitewater rafting the Rio Grande in New Mexico, camping on the face of the sun (Lake Havasu), and taking my pup to the dog beach on Coronado Island. I enjoy many things outside of these pursuits too so if it sounds like we have nothing in common yet, we'll just have to keep talking! Ask me how I feel about Target, Amazon, Taylor Swift, Eminem, young adult fiction, Netflix, Chinese food, kittens, otters... etc. We'll find some common ground somewhere. :)

This year will be fun, challenging, rewarding, and oh-so-quick. Let's be sure to make every day together count!

-Ms. Harmon

This is Scout (my German Shorthair pup) and I on the slopes of Mount Shasta last winter. We love snow!
