Separates parts of a sentence or list
First, we walked, then, we ran.

She was given new shoes, socks, and gloves.
Semicolon
Separates independent but related clauses.
If you could link the clauses with the word “therefore”, then a semicolon usually can be used instead.

It was raining outside this morning; recesses will be held in the classrooms.
Colon
Indicates a list
Please make sure you buy: milk, eggs, bacon, and syrup.

Dash/Hyphen
Indicates an interjection or thought in the midst of a sentence
I was reading during SSR - almost dozing off in class - when Ms. Smalling walked in.

Parentheses
Includes information within a sentence that is not essential but helpful. The sentence will be fine if the information included is omitted.

The closest bus stop (on Mimosa and Sunnyslope) is only 3 minutes away from my house!

Annotating Text
Citing Evidence
Purpose
Indicates which specific information is most important, clarifies terms and relationships, and allows for further analysis
Provides support for what you are saying, tells the reader why you feel a certain way, or further clarifies a point you’re making
Example
Frederick Douglass felt that emancipation from slavery would be more meaningful if the freed blacks contributed to the fight. He said, “A war undertaken for the purpose of keeping colored men enslaved calls loudly for colored men to help end it.” The war’s purpose largely affected blacks therefore they had the greatest stake in ensuring it was won.
